Magnesium is the second-most abundant element in human cells and the fourth-most important positively charged ion in the body, so it’s little wonder this low-profile mineral is so vital to good health and well being. Magnesium, a major component of Epsom Salt, also helps to regulate the activity of more than 325 enzymes and performs a vital role in orchestrating many bodily functions, from muscle control and electrical impulses to energy production and the elimination of harmful toxins.
The National Academy of Sciences, however, reports that most Americans are magnesium deficient, helping to account for our society’s high rate of heart disease, stroke, osteoporosis, arthritis and joint pain, digestive maladies and stress-related illnesses, chronic fatigue and a host of other ailments.
The Academy estimates the average American male gets just 80% of the magnesium required for good health, while females get only 70% of their recommended levels. Nutritionists say Americans’ magnesium levels have dropped more than 50% in the past century.
Researchers and physicians report that raising your magnesium levels may:
Improve heart and circulatory health, reducing irregular heartbeats, preventing hardening of the arteries, reducing blood clots and lowering blood pressure. Improve the body’s ability to use insulin, reducing the incidence or severity of diabetes. Flush toxins and heavy metals from the cells, easing muscle pain and helping the body to eliminate harmful substances. Improve nerve function by regulating electrolytes. Also, calcium is the main conductor for electrical current in the body, and magnesium is necessary to maintain proper calcium levels in the blood. Relieve stress. Excess adrenaline and stress are believed to drain magnesium, a natural stress reliever, from the body.
Magnesium is necessary for the body to bind adequate amounts of serotonin, a mood-elevating chemical within the brain that creates a feeling of well being and relaxation.
Epson Salt is a multi-purposed all natural affordable compound that can be used in everything from health and beauty, gardening and lawn care.
Epson Salt is magnesium sulfate.
The magnesium sulfate is the healing properties to promote better health.
Magnesium helps to improve heart rate, prevent hardening of the arteries, reduce blood clots and lower blood pressure. Magnesium reduces stress, improves nerve function, eliminates toxins and metals from cells and helps the body to use insulin
Sulfates are important for forming brain tissue, joint proteins, stimulates the pancreas, and mucin proteins.
Taken internally Epson Salt acts as a detoxifying agent for colon cleansing.
Taking an Epson Salt bath not only soothes the nerves but draws toxins out of the body through the skin. The salt bath also allows the sulfates to absorb through the skin.
Add Epson Salt to petroleum jelly or face cream and you have a great facial cleanser. Massage into the skin and rinse with cold water.
Scrub Epson Salt on wet skin to exfoliate. You can use this scrub from head to toe.
Use Epson Salt mixed with a deep conditioner to add volume to your hair.
Hair volumizer: Combine equal parts of deep conditioner and Epson salt. Warm in a pan. Work the warm mixture through your hair and leave on for 20 minutes. Rinse.
Remove excess oil from hair: Epson salt soaks up excess oil from hair. Add 9 tablespoons of Epson salt to 1/2 cup of oily hair shampoo. Apply one tablespoon of the liquid to your hair when it is dry; rinse with cold water. Pour lemon juice or organic apple cider vinegar through the hair, leave on for 5-10 minutes, and then rinse.
Remove hairspray: Combine 1 gallon of water, 1 cup of lemon juice, and 1 cup Epson salt. Combine, cover and let set for 24 hours. The next day, pour the mixture onto your dry hair and let it sit for 20 minutes. Then shampoo as normal.
Head lice can be taken care of inexpensively. Make a paste with warm water and Epson Salt. Rub the mixture through the scalp and rub the hair shaft. Keep working the strands of hair by rubbing the hair between your fingers. Rinse this out of the hair with the hottest water that your child can handle. Next take a cheap hair conditioner and apply it all through the hair and scalp. Take a very fine tooth comb and start combing through the hair strands rinsing out the comb often. Rinse hair. You may need to repeat this over again. Since there are no chemicals involved with this procedure you can do it as often as necessary.
Use Epson Salts on your lawn and in your garden. You will notice bushier plants and brighter color blooms and your lawn will be thicker and greener.
You can sprinkle the Epson Salt in your garden around rose bushes, tomato plants, pepper plants, evergreens, azaleas, and rhododendrons, always water thoroughly after applying to get the salt into the soil at the roots.
Sprinkle with Epson salt on soil and work in before seeding lawn. The magnesium and sulfates help to germinate the seeds and make them stronger and healthier. You can also do this when you are starting plants for the garden from seeds.
These are a few of the ways I use Epson salt. I am sure there are probably many more. The reason I like using Epson Salt is because it is safe for the environment and very inexpensive, two great combinations for an environmentally conscious tightwad.

I always knew that soaking in a tub full of hot water with a few cups of Epson Salts was good for relaxing muscles and drawing toxins from the body, but I could never figure out why. And it wasn’t until I spent some time at the Epson Salt Industry Council web site that I learned that Epson salts-made of the mineral magnesium sulfate-are also a sedative for the nervous system.
When magnesium sulfate is absorbed through the skin, such as in a bath, it draws toxins from the body, sedates the nervous system, reduces swelling, relaxes muscles, is a natural emollient, exfoliator, and much more.
